   The bean counter logic makes perfect sense within its limited 
scope. Perhaps you can turn it around. If they must dispose of 
the stuff as trash perhaps you can offer to collect the trash at 
a discount to them. Ask what it will cost them for disposal and 
then offer to show up with trucks and labor for a substantial 
discount. Not zero, beancounters do not understand zero. If you 
are good at fast talking perhaps you can save the gear and make a 
little something into the bargain.
    Corporate minds work on a very simple level. If you put 
things in a way that makes sense to them you can get away with 
nearly anything.
