Jack,

Thanks.  I didn't think a series resistor would affect the speed much of 
a sync AC motor, but maybe it reduces the torque some. There is a 
bail-operated mercury switch to shut off the motor when the paper gets 
tight.  Maybe with the resistor in there, it didn't have enough torque 
to pull the bail tight enough to shut its self off??
