[GreenKeys] LPW 300 paper winder

I just acquired a LPW 300 paper winder. In checking it out, I found that 
there is a large power resistor (cant read it, but parts list says 600 
Ohms) mounted next to the motor, but it has been taken out of the circuit.

Did this resistor go in series with the motor?? (but it is a synch AC 
motor).

Anyone know its purpose?
