I tried several things on the cheap and finally settled on this at about $
190. If you look around you can usually find them sold at places like
Amazon for the same price with free shipping. I find the 10 power lenses
are fine for me. They give about 10 inches or so from the bottom lenses to
the work.
I need glasses to read or see very well up close, and to a smaller extent at
a distance. I do see well enough at a distance not to need glasses to drive.

I wonder if there is any sort of magnifier that could help you with
close work. I do not need cataract surgery yet but my eyes have become fixed
focus at a medium distance. I need reading glasses to read but can still
work by having the right strength.
Its a PITA to need three or four different strengths but they do work. I get
plain drugstore reading glasses, not prescription.
For distance I need prescription glasses or contacts. In fact, I have the
same problem as you when wearing contact lenses, fixed focus at infinity.
Same thing, if I wear the right reading glasses I can work close up. The is
a discount grocery and dry goods chain here called 99c Stores, reading
glasses are 99c so I get mine there.
We had a surface mount rig at work before I retired. Used hot air to
fuse the solder. Not too difficult but takes some practice. I think it had a
built-in magnifier on a gooseneck.
