Does anyone know the history of the EXTEL group who made teleprinters for a while? I saw one in
operation at Dayton one year. Hank, W6SKC, the owner of DOVETRON, brought his prototype MPC TU
to Dayton in the early 70s, along with an EXTEL machine and a tape recorder. He set it all up in
his motel room and invited small groups in to see it in operation under a wide range of varying
conditions on the tape recorder. DOVETRON #1 had a PC board that was 1/4" thick! Built like the
proverbial rock. He had the top cover off so that the 'innards' could be seen.
Hank became a 'mainstay advertiser' in the RTTY Journal for a number of years. His various MPC
models were sought after by many once the details of performance got out. I was fortunate to get
one of his 'returns' for a bit less than half price. The original owner wanted more 'bells and
whistles' in his so he sent his back along with more money for the 'deluxe' model. Hank said he
changed all of the ICs and ran it through the test bench before he sent it to me. I still have
that unit around here. I sent it back to get the "CROSS LED" display installed.
Anyway, what about EXTEL? Were they around very long? I heard that the name came from "Ex
Teletype Corp" employees.
Thanks & 73,
Ralph - W8ROI

They may have gotten some seed money from Western Union who was looking for a cheaper replacement for the M28. Apparently it was too expensive for WU, so it was sold to the military as a tactical machine in a weatherproof case - the AN/TGC-14 (http://rtty.com/development/teletype/mite/index.html)
