Paul,

0 dB might be too "hot".

Thanks for the picture Nick. That is indeed strange.

I agree with Jeff that the culprit is likely item 1.

People reported that this did not happen with George’s stream. There are three differences between his setup and mine. Both his setup and mine use identical software to create the baudot stream and both use HAL ST8000A modems to generate the RTTY tones. The difference is in what happens after that.

First, he has a different audio encoding/streaming software and computer than I do. He uses a PC running Windows XP, some software to encode the audio to mp3, and some software to generate a shoutcast compatible audio stream. I use a raspberry PI and Linux software (darkice) to encode the audio to mp3, and Icecast to generate the audio stream.

I don’t believe this difference has any bearing on the problem. Some people receive the stream just fine, and inside my house it is flawless. That said, there just might be something in the way the stream is encoded that makes it susceptible to Internet flaws. I could try upping the gain on the HAL modem to see if that makes a difference (it’s currently peaking at 0dB. I could overdrive it a bit. Or I could fiddle with the encoding settings (bit rates, etc).

The second difference is our router. Not sure the model George has. Mine is an ASUS RT-AC68U. It’s a nice router, fairly new.

The third second difference is our ISP. George has century link DSL, and I have Comcast high speed cable. I have PLENTY of bandwidth. In fact, the only traffic running on my comcast line the past two weeks is ITTY.

If the problem is due to my ISP, I’m not sure what to do.

I could tweak the RTTY software to always send two LTRS (and might as well do FIGS also) instead of one. That kind of approach bugs me, but might make the problem go away.

Any thoughts?

Paul
