Thanks to Nick, K4NYW, for the photos he took at the HamFest of Nick,
N0NCQ's and my TTY displays. Also present at the HamFest from our Greenkeys
group, although not there at the time of the photo of the two Nicks and
myself, were Jim, K8ARY, and Gene, N4UJ.
Grrenkeys was well represented, with three of us (N0NCQ, N4UJ, and N4TTY)
all living in close proximity and members of the same amateur radio club.
I think I have created a monster in Nick, N0NCQ. I got him started and his
now rolling full steam ahead! His display was really impressive compared to
my meager two machines in their normal wear and tear and heavy use attire!
There were kudos from many thanking us for our efforts of keeping these
machines alive and presenting them so the old hats could wax nostalgic, and
from many youngsters and their parents for presenting something that the
newer generations have never even seen. Young children that have never
known life without smart phones and tablet computers, while indifferent when
they first walked up to these "old" clunkers, became ecstatic when they
found out they could send and receive text messages and punch out their
names in block letters on a piece of paper tape. I purposely left the
"Aetheric Message Machine Company, Ltd" byline in the received text messages
and explained how the author of the software (Thanks John!) ran a telegraph
office at Steampunk exhibitions. That fact in and of itself really
impressed a lot of folks.
Nick, N0NCQ, and I have even received an invitation (from an attendee at the
hamfest) to display our equipment and possibly do a presentation at the
annual convention of the Antique Radio Charlotte (Charlotte, NC) next March
22, 23, & 24. Their convention this year will be focusing on radio-related
and crypto-related mechanical and electronic technologies.
Nick and I will keep you posted as to how that progresses.
