GM OMs;
I know this has gotten off-topic, but since we're a tight-knit
group - and watch-out for each other - I want to bring up 2 more
scams I've dealt with. These two were a little more slippery
than usual.
I quit my job with a computer company. I had (sorta) planned
on it - but not at THIS specific time. I DID HAVE enough money
put away for a nice 6-month vacation before having to look for
another job. Two days into my "vacation" I get a call from
a headhunter. Where he got my name from, I'll never know.
Anyway, he says that he'll find me a job with AT LEAST a
starting salary of $50K. I was making $40K at the time, so that
would be a nice boost. I say: "sounds good". He says: "Our fee is
$5,000.oo - but we'll guarantee that we find you a job." The words
that came out of my mouth were not mine - but this is what they were:
Well, - I'm out of work - and really can't afford the $5,000.oo BUT
I'll tell you what: I'll come down there and sign a form that says
if you find me a job for $50K, I'll give you $10,000.oo when I'm hired.
I'll even go down to a notary with you and have it notarized!". He say:
"It's only $5,000.oo". I say: "Yes, - but with no income $5,000.oo is
a lot of money. I'm willing to give you DOUBLE that." Next sound: "CLICK!"
I was selling another Porsche. California is "flake city": I'd get
all sorts of people that say they were coming by - and never show up.
Then, there were the people who spend their Saturday and Sunday playing
"Disneyland" - where they go around and test-drive cars that are for sale,
just for fun. Then I get a call. The guys asks me if I sold the car. I
told him that it's still for sale. He asks how the selling is going. I
tell him about California (above). He says that he can sell the car for
me. He says he only deals with Doctors and Lawyers - who are MUCH TO BUSY
to go around looking at cars. He says they want a good one without
wasting their time. Look: here's the deal... You take 4 good pictures
of the car. I'm going to send you a Fed-ex envelope. Put the picture in
there with a description of the car, When I get them I'll charge
$400.oo to your MasterCard and I'll have the car sold within two weeks.
Sounded good to me - so I went with it. Two days later he calls and say
that he has the pictures - and "this car will sell by the end of the
week - or at latest, next week". I call him in the middle of the 2nd
week. I dial the number, wait, and then I hear Doo DOOO DOOOOOT! the
number you have dialed has been disconnected... To make a long story
short, M-C picked up the loss because of their guarantee.
So: when someone offers me something GREAT - that I have to pay for
UP-FRONT before I see or I get it - I'm real suspicious.
