I believe they were third-party things, mostly military.  Then in the
ham community there were a couple of re-inking tools used on the work
bench rather than mounted on the machine.

With cotton ribbons the ribbon might wear out before the ink was all
gone.  Nylon ribbons were more durable and absorbed less ink, so I
guess re-inkers might be more practical with them.
