Most of what I've seen here is rather negative about R.S. but my experience has been very good with them. We had 3 different RS store here in Bryan, TX and when the corporate store in the mall closed I was sad, more pissed off than anything. I used them frequently for their availability of small parts, ...... plugs, jacks, small components like resistors & capacitors, soldering components, audio cables and anything I just don't have on hand for some little project I've got going. I have a pretty good junkbox of parts on hand for most vintage stuff but not everything for newer stuff. I always found those guy nice but rarely used them for technical advice because I knew their limitations. Since closing I defaulted to the other non-corporate RS stores and found them just as stocked as corporate. To date they are still in operation and I do use them frequently. Most of my purchasing is online through Mouser of eBay when it comes to 2/3's of my electronics needs but RS is always there if I when them. Just a couple of weeks ago I needed a ½ watt resistor and electrolytic cap and they had them. So, I think the lesson for me here is that the buyer should know the vendor's stock. Bad mouth them as you wish, but don't expect them to be your electronics consultant at minimum wage. As for Circuit City, yep they are nothing more than a yuppy and later aged electronics store competing with Best Buy and Walmart. But, when it comes to computers, phones, video, stuff the guys I met usually knew their stuff. Nope, they aren't electronic component guys. You wanna feel dumb, go buy a new data phone and have a 20 year-old tell you (a 68 year-old) how to make the damned thing work. Those guys are way ahead of us in their generation of electronics. Mention teletype to them and you'll see a funny look on their face. ....................Mike.
