[GreenKeys] Duplicating paper tape on Mylar tape?

In the later 70's part of my job was running 'punch jobs' on a Burroughs
mainframe. The tapes were for the 'newer generation' Gardner-Denver wire
wrap machines. The older machines were driven by a modified IBM 026
keypunch used as a reader.

Some nights (I worked graveyard midnight to 8 AM) a typical run would
consume 2-5 rolls, some of the bigger ones 10.

The punch when I started was an OEM'ed BRPE.

For production the tape was Mylar-aluminum-Mylar, for prototypes the tape
was Mylar-paper-Mylar.

If the punch pins were hardened steel they would be toast in a couple days.
The reader was optical and did not like
rough edges. My observation was the pins would
get so hot they might of been loosing their temper. After a full roll they
got so hot one could not touch the punch block area.

We converted to carbide pins, do not know the source that helped a lot.

Around 1978 a piece of large test equipment I used was driven by a PDP-11
and had a Remex reader-punch. The advantage
it had was one could replace the pins in about 15 minutes.

I witnessed two Teletypes being used to punch m\Mylar-Al-Mylar one was at
33. Almost a full roll was punched at once.
The punch froze near the end of the roll.

Another was a 35, I don't know if the Mylar tape was the reason the TWX man
had to come out and swap the punch but
one of the TWX operators a normally quite lady, would have made a sailor
blush when she found out someone from
the production floor did it the night before.

Maybe both of fluke but my call do not even punch 1" of tape unless you
have a Teletype envelope with 6 or 9 pins in
it.
