      Well, I can think of one:  sound absorption.  Carpet is not wonder 
absorbent but will reduce reverberation noticably.   Carpet should be 
anti-static.  It is possible to buy carpet that has conducting material 
in it.   Another reason is that short nap carpet will catch and hold 
small parts like screws that will bounce all over if they hit concrete 
or even wood floors.   Also, carpet catches and holds dust that will 
just bunch up and blow around on hard floors.  You need a good vacuum 
but you need one anyway for hard floors to keep the dust down.
