Thanks Steve, I am going to try your method first. Seems to me I should be
able to get it pretty close and if not then I buy a gauge. Don't know what
other problems I will run into until I get this done but I did do a lot of
cleaning! Again thanks all for the help.

Thinking back 40 some odd years I don't think I ever used a gauge to set
those screws. Just set them so that it takes a small amount of force to
move from one side to the other with the "same" amount of force on both
sides and the armature staying the way you moved it while power is off.
Doing lots and lots of machines it was a "feel" that was acquired!
