Teletype made a series of high speed punches, the best known is the BPRE.
They were not current loop.
Bulletin 215B (manual)

They presented to the user 9 > 3 ohm coils and a pulse from a magnetic
pickup.
If your serious about burning up 1" tape, keep your eyes open for a Facit
or Remex. From time to time you can get one from a machine shop that
has/had NC machine tools.
Unless your going to read the tape more then something like > 100 times
there isn't much reason to use Mylar or the Mylar/Aluminum/Mylar tape.
NEVER NEVER punch Mylar based tape in a model 33.
If you end up with a Remex reader, your pretty much limited to using black
paper tape. They illuminated the photocells (phototransistors?) with a
miniature sun simulator.. ok actually a lamp that was pretty much as
bright.
As to finding 1" tape. I've pretty much given up. When my remaining supply
gets to a couple rolls I'll get back to making the splitter I started about
5 years ago.
