Dave,

You have certainly been infected with browser hijack malware, maybe worse.

Downloading from unknown sites just searching google and clicking on links 
will guarantee that you will get infected.

At least verify that the file's MD5s match .

FWIW, I have never heard of the responses that you are getting when 
"attempting to download",  "unavailable" - do you mean a 404 'file not 
found' error?

What does "Leech Attempt" mean? what returned that response?

The safest thing to do is to use one machine for file download only, then 
virus scan that file before moving it to the target machine.

Not much left to do now but reinstall ...
