[GreenKeys] Using Media mail for perforator tape

I went over all of this with our postmaster. She says this
should be just fine as long as there is a method to show any
postal inspector how the tape or roll paper is used for any
scientific or educational use.

There is a caution however besides the legality. MEDIA MAIL
has the lowest priority in the postal system. In areas of large
populations the automated postal facilities are huge and any
package without tracking on it can be easily lost.

Most of the MEDIA MAIL and PARCEL POST mail that comes
here to northern Illinois goes through the Forest Park, IL facility...
Many times called the "Black Hole" of the postal system. In
the 9 years I have lived here I never received five (5) large
parcels that were sent via PARCEL POST.

Bottom line: Useable paper used for the machines can go
via MEDIA MAIL but be sure to get delivery confirmation so
there is a 90 percent chance you will actually receive the package.

Best,

Media mail (under current USPS guidelines) must be
educational and can not be a computer or digital drive (hard
disk, thumb drive, etc.). So write on the tape (end that
can be easily written and read) "For educational use
only". When sending just note that it contains media for
educational use. If pressed for details - note that it's
used to demonstrate (teach about) vintage communications
technology. Education is one of the basics used to qualify
for 501 C3 tax exempt status - so needless to say - anyone
involved with a museum, public service (to including
educating the public about the service and how it works),
etc. always looks for opportunities to promote and perform
the educational function. So be it with providing supplies
to do so.

best regards...
