[GreenKeys] oil and grease

The actual KS 7470 and 7471 lubricants the Bell System used based on
Teletype's recommendations were plain non-detergent bearing grease and
SAE 20 motor oil provided by the American Oil Co. of New Jersey.
KS, of course is an acronym for Kearny Specification... Kearny is a
city in New Jersey where Western Electric wrote it's specifications

I wonder if there is the same problem with Teletype that there is
with old cameras: that the lubricants are specified by brand name and
type and where some of the products have been off the market for
decades. The problem is finding out what these really were and what
modern products will replace them; sometimes you can guess but not
always.
BTW, I am not very sanguine about using engine oil for general
lubrication. It usually has additives which may be advantageous in a
gasoline engine but have undesired effects for cold lubrication.
Oil for machine bearings, whether sleeve or ball/roller should be
free of acids and waxes that will turn to sludge with time. Synthetics
have the advantage of not oxidizing but may not have the right
lubricating qualities. I am no expert but have done enough research
to discover that lubricants are not a simple subject. I think where
you are dealing with something like a Teletype machine which may have
parts which are difficult to replace or to obtain that some attention
to this will pay off.
I suspect you know all this stuff :-)
