I think that this has been beat to death already, but WD-40 is NOT a 
lubricant, it's a Water Displace that leaves behind a varnish-like coating.

I doubt that you'll find anything readily available that will work better 
than Varsol (Stoddard's solvent).

If you want to make it water miscible, just add a little concentrated Gunk.

The only thing that I find WD-40 good for is coating tools like pliers, 
screwdrivers, blades, that you don't want to paint, but still impart some 
corrosion resistance.

WD-40 is probably the most over-rated, misused retail chemical product on 
the market.

But hey, just my opinion.
