I hate WD 40 for cleaning as it can leave some of its gunk behind that will 
clog up te works later, but do not want to start a debate on that.

Try some Kroil.  I use it by the case where I work.  It really cuts through 
rust if you spray it on for 2 or 3 days.  Works very well for simple 
cleaning also.

For a cheap cleaner do a search for Ed's Red.  It is a home made gun cleaner 
out of equal parts of kerosene, automatic transmission fluid, acatone,and 
stodders solvent.  Others will probably subjust some detergent type cleaners 
such as Purple power or Simply green or such.  They are probably fine, but 
remove all the lubercation and you will need to lube everything to keep it 
from rusting.
