In fact, it is very stupid to bid up an item such as that machine....the 
sniper was going to get it one way or another.  To him, the price was 
irrelevant.

Sniping, by virtue that it exists, moots such nonsensical one upsmanship 
bidding.

The only sensible way to bid it to bid late and only for the amount you are 
willing to pay...which prevents such nonsense as one upping the other guys 
bid adnauseum.
