A couple of notes on this post:

As Don Cunninham points out, that link above gives information for the  
ST-8000, not the ST-8000A.

A peek inside the ST-8000A here indicates to me that there are two  
transformers.  They are the same transformer but are mounted reversed  
from each other, indicating that one goesinta and one goesouta.

I would expect that both have windings that are not connected to  
ground.  If you need/want to make a ground connection at the terminal  
unit, you'd have to do that intentionally.

Converting UP speed can be done but not the reverse.  The 60 WPM  
character can produce a 100 WPM character that is done before the next  
60 WPM character comes along. The reverse won't work because "at  
speed" characters at 100 WPM each finish before a 60 WPM character  
could complete.
