Hi Roy,
Yes, I am a campus cop at a community college, that because of the location needs 24/7 human security. We have a centrally dispatched electronic alarm system that was the low bid, and it crashes every time that it rains. I am the shift leader actually, and if no one comes in, well, you know who has to cover unless I am on vacation. I am one of the few holders of a Missouri cop card that can where his hair however I want to. (My employer has tried to 'tone down' the cop image...that's OK, I will still put someone on the ground and cuff 'em before they know what hit if they start acting stupid (i.e., getting violent)...pretty good for a 45 YO...most of our trouble believe it or not is considered domestic disturbances that manage to find their way on our property.)
As far as equipment goes, right now I am basically starting from scratch. I have just obtained a SB-300 that was put together I think by someone who was less than sober. It only receives a few very strong signals, and attaching an antenna to it does not help. I will probably have it serviced by an hourly repair tech at an amateur radio shop. (will probably pay more for that to be repaired than what I paid for it.)
I am working on building some audio filters right now for the FSK signals. The filters are described in the old ARRL publication titled Specialized Communication Techniques, published in 1975. I would eventually like to get an older (if possible) TTY unit that does not depend on a lot of electronics...mostly mechanical. My ultimate goal would be to either make or obtain a TT/L-2 decoder. I am not sure what direction that I will go for transmission...probably an Icom (I know that is not '60's tech, but eventually, I would like to be able to send receive RTTY on any of my rigs with a jack panel).
Best and 73
