The difference between analog and digital TV is sort of like the difference
between SSB and FM radio transmissions. When the signals are strong,
digital TV (and FM radio) is superior, but when the signal is weak, digital
TV (& FM radio) drops out while you can still see the analog TV ( & hear
the SSB signal).
There are some theoretical benefits to digital TV, like elimination of
ghosts and transmitting four different programs on one TV channel. This
assumes having four program streams worth sending out. Our local PBS
station is transmitting 3 program streams right now, but I'm afraid most
commercial stations will just put on more reruns, if anything.
The FCC just put out a report on coverage areas of all the US digital TV
stations, with technical details and showing how the coverage are will
change from analog to digital. Generally the coverage areas are about the
same, but most of the digital transmitters are using a lot less power.
