Hi folks:

Wow -- lots of info on paint, and I am still a bit confused. Let me gather
it together here in one place. I need to paint a 28ASR sometime, and I am
not sure what would be best.

I have two 28KSR units (both Bell Sys) that I would describe as
"slightly-greenish-dark-gray," and a 28ASR which looks more like simply a
"dark-gray," except the front section of metal (from TD to KB) is the
greeny color, but almost flat, unlike the satin-looking slightly-greeny
KSRs. Is this two-tone color scheme on the ASR standard, or did someone
just replace parts? Or did paint just fade at different rates? The
missing logo on the ASR's TD was round (judging by the faded paint) so I
think it was also a Bell unit; pics I have see show either a round Bell
logo or a rectangular Teletype logo. ps: anyone have a spare logo of either?

I have seen pictures of military 28ASRs and 28-compacts in a very light
gray. So how many colors were proper for the 28 line? Light-gray,
dark-gray, and greenish-dark-gray? I presume that the greeny dark gray is
the olive-gray Don mentions, but why do I see a dark gray on one of my
machines that does not seem to have a green hue? Was there another
civilian dark-gray color, or was my machine perhaps re-painted?

From Don -- original paint colors:
Original U.S. Navy and U.S.A.F.: Light Gray code HB
Original Bell System and civilian machines: Olive Gray code HF
Original Bell System 28 machines: Medium Green code GA
(Western Union used a lighter green)

From Jim -- late WU olive recommendation:
Early Western Union: Light Olive Green and Dark Olive Green
Late Western Union: Smooth Olive Green (match: Krylon 3522 Italian Olive)

From Nick -- light-to-medium gray recommendation:
Rustoleum Smoke Gray gloss enamel (7786-830) - photo at:

 From Jack -- light-gray recommendation:
Rustoleum Light Machine Gray

I looked at rustoleum.com and found the following grays (listed
light-to-dark relatively within each family simply on the online swatches):

"American Accents Smooth Satin" -- 7926830 - Stone Gray (light)
"American Accents Smooth Satin" -- 243265 - Granite (dark)

"Stops Rust" Gloss Enamel -- 7783830 - Pewter Gray (light)
"Stops Rust" Gloss Enamel -- 7786830 - Smoke Gray (medium)
"Stops Rust" Gloss Enamel -- 7784830 - Charcoal Gray (dark)

"Stops Rust Textured" -- 7224830 - Nickel Textured (light)
"Stops Rust Textured" -- 7221830 - Dark Pewter Textured (dark)
(not sure what kind of texture this is)

"Painter's Touch" Gloss Enamel -- 1982830 - Winter Gray (light)
"Painter's Touch" Gloss Enamel -- 1986830 - Dark Gray (dark)

"Painter's Touch" Satin Enamel -- 240554 - Aluminum (light)
"Painter's Touch" Satin Enamel -- 244895 - Granite (dark)

"Professional High Perf" Enamel -- 7515838 - Aluminum (really-light)
"Professional High Perf" Enamel -- 7581838 - Light Machine Gray (light)
"Professional High Perf" Enamel -- 7519838 - Stainless Steel (medium)
"Professional High Perf" Enamel -- 7587838 - Dark Machine Gray (dark)

"Universal" 245216 - Gloss Arctic Gray (light)

"Appliance Epoxy" -- 7887830 - Stainless (light)

I wandered over to Home Depot to see what is stocked, and found some of
these. Judging solely from the cap colors, the only one that kinda looked
right was the "Professional High Perf" Enamel Light Machine Gray, which
looked like it would be a good match for the light-gray used on the
military machines. I didn't see the Smoke Gray that Nick used which may be
a better match for some machines -- or if not really a close match,
perhaps just a nice color for a 28.

Does anyone have any experience with any other colors here?

thanks,

gil
