Actually, although it has been decades since I played with them, I'm sure 
that there were at least four and more likely six different motors made for the 
14/15/19 sets.  Two or four are synchronous and brushless.  They operate on (if 
all were made - I've only actually had two) 115 or 220 VAC at either 60 or 50 
CPS.  Then there were at least two series governed motors, 115 VAC and 115 
VDC.  These are the ones with brushes, and all do spark a little.  And as has 
already been mentioned, in general the gear sets differ, both pinion and 
mainshaft.  So you can't simply unplug a 60 cps sync motor and plug in a 115 VAC 
governed one.
