Hi Randy:
I poked around and found an MSDS for 3-in-1 oil:
http://www.a1motorstores.co.uk/shop-manager-info/cosshh/3_in_One_Drip_Oil.pdf
The composition is listed as:
PALE SPINDLE OIL >98%
CORROSION INHIBITOR Less than 1.0%
CITRONELLA OIL Less than 0.5% N
I don't see how this leads to long-term gumming more so than any other
light oil, or why it would attract dirt more than any similar-weight
oil. But I have heard that said elsewhere as well. It's not like there
are volatile solvents to evaporate, so it is not in the same category as
WD-40 by any means. I suppose only a chemist could give a definitive answer.
And though I don't know for certain, 3-in-1 seems like a decent light oil
to me. It's on a couple of my tty machines, so I guess time will tell.
