This is far from definitive - but the basics are pretty much right:

Note the comment about attracting dirt - that is indeed true - and one 
of the primary causes of it getting thicker - even gummy if allowed to 
go that far.  However - in TTY use - since we tend to squirt oil at 
everything - often - that tends to wash out the trapped contaminants and 
provide fresh oil to everything in sight...
