[GreenKeys] RE; UPS overview and tech cosiderations

An only mildly interesting story from me.
I have a small 1U file server and also have a postal telegraph
"synchronous" clock. Darn clock stops the moment you even look at the
electrical service! So I bought a cheapo ups to keep from having to
reset it all the time. I also plugged into it my heathkit GC-1107 (I
think that's the model) so I don't get a flashing 12:00 every time I
lose power.
So I did a test. What I found was that when this cheapo ups was "on
battery" for 10 minutes, my heathkit clock would advance 20 by minutes!
I finally deduced that this must be because of the waveform of the ups
being probably very square! The heathkit was probably seeing 120Hz in
stead of 60Hz!
So now I own a nice APC that works great. The other benefit is with a
serial connection, my server will automatically shut down properly. I
can also get a graphical chart of the wall plate voltage over a period
of a day (maybe more I forget). This is by using the "powerchute
business addition" software.
So, just about 1hour ago, my lights flashed. When upstairs to see how
everything survived. Server was A-OK and not rebuilding the RAID like it
would do. Heathkit was great. Darn Postal Telegraph clock still stopped!
Regards
Eugene

Damn good advise Peter, I have printed your email. In order to preserve
off
line (yes, paper still works best for me).
I am glad to meet one of the engineers responsible for these advanced
capability UPS's and the considerations that preceded their design.
I am a member of the IEEE, and VP of our local engineering group. Were
you a
local to the area, I would now try and get you to accept an invitation
to give
us a talk along the lines of your short paper.
By the way.... just about every point you made i was going to also
mention,
so i am glad you took the time to do it (thereby saving my typing
finger)
I wondered what the "name" was for the sine units...
I sort of favor the more technical units as well... ones indicating
battery
condition, charging rate etc.
