ok, progressing nicely. Next (and hopefully final) question.

I have been playing around with the motor control with ITTY to see if I can see the 28KSR turn off completely when the line is quiet and turn back on when there is activity (autostart?).  There are a multitude of switches and I think I went through all permutations of them, but the 28 never turns off.  I would have thought that muting the sound card would, after a while, shut down the 28. I have the 28 plugged into the ST-6.  Here are the switches:

AUTO/MOTOR
AUTO/STANDBY
AUTO/AUTO OFF

When I set the switch to standby, I get a steady mark and the printer stops running open.  The other switches seem to have no effect. I will say, that when I shut off the st-6, the 28 shuts off too. So the relay is working (I hear the relay energize and de-energize when the st-6 turns on and off).

Any more ideas?
