TM 11-487 (10/44) contains a long table listing voltages and frequencies
(including DC) found in various countries and major cities around the world. 25
CPS is listed for Toronto, parts of British Columbia, Nice, the Panama Canal
Zone and parts of China. Also as an alternate for India but no specific
locations given. Part of Italy and part of their holdings in North Africa are 40 to
45 CPS. The rest is 50, as is most of the rest of Europe. Gibralter is given
as 110 VAC 76 CPS (plus 440 VDC) and Malta as 105 VAC 100 CPS. North and
Central America, except for parts of Canada and the Canal Zone is 60. Guam, the
P.I. and the Society Islands listed as 60 CPS, Samoa and most of S.E. Asia
(French Indochina) as 50. But no 25 CPS listings for the Pacific.
As I dimly recall, the Canal was being built just as DC distribution systems
were beginning to fall from favor and ended up 25 CPS. Electrification in the
Pacific came later and must have gone 50 or 60 depending upon who was doing
the work (Americans or Europeans).
I've been missing a lot of mail lately from Al's lists so I didn't see the
original post. But it probably had nothing to do with M28 motors, as I can't
think of any reason any 25 CPS ones would ever have been built. Unless the
Canal Zone didn't convert until later in the 50's. Could have happened.
