Thanks for posting this, George, it's very informative and a nice link back
to Irv Hoff (I knew him from the computer BBS side of things rather than
rtty, but it's great to see the roots of his later work). 

I know nothing about rtty and very little about teletypes but I might be
able to help a little bit on the scanning end - I downloaded, printed and
then rescanned Irv's article, but my .pdf file is only 1MB instead of the
original 8MB. 

I scanned using the "line art" setting on my scanner while it looks like you
used either a gray scale or color scan to create the original. You lose
nothing if the original is simple black-and-white text or line drawings like
the bulk of this article, and if the final illustration was critical, you
could just do that one page using gray or color scanning and then combine
the files for final output.

I hope this is helpful - it's certainly not meant as criticism, but just a
bit of advice. And thanks again for posting this piece.
