Jan here:
I went right to work down loading AN INTRODUCTION TO AMATEUR RADIOTELETYPE by
Irvin M. Hoff. Boy that hit the spot. Just what I needed a month ago. For
the most part, I actually understand what he is talking about, but it sure
would have been nice for the group to have this on the site as the First RTTY
Golden Book. Beginner, go no further before you read this first. The pictures,
I love the pictures, and it was written so a novice could understand it. It
was perfect, but now where is the Golden Book On ASK and AFSK Demodulators?
After the beginner gets one of the teletypes greased and running, the next big
question is what funny little box with wires do you put between the radio and
revolving metal? Now the group got me started on the ST-5A, and I just read
about the model 1200 fsk demodulator, and on the MMTTY computer program, they
explain three types which the program tries to emulate, but what do these
suckers look like? Picture, my Golden Book must have pictures. For example, on
ebay, I see these: Hal CT2200 Communications Controller, Kantronics Field Day 2
CW/RTTY decoder, Heathkit Model HD-3006--Crossfire-RTTY-, M-7000 Universal RTTY
Radio Receiver Decoder, AEA CP-1 RTTY Computer Terminal and finally, the
BPS-6700 AFSAFSK with foldable loop and TD converter. I made the last one up, but
as far as the beginner goes, they all sound valid to me. And I am sure the
designs cover the last fifty years. Are there new mystery boxes out there with
longer numerical names? If I had a list of solid proven affordable late model
demodulators with pictures, don't forget the pictures, I would have a much
better understanding of the whole show. Then all I would have to hurdle is
whether to go fsk or afsk for Christmas. I wonder if Rudolph knows where the bell
key is on a 19 set? Having way, way too much fun learning about RTTY on the
warm desert in southern cal with all your encouragement and help.
Thanks,
Jan
