  I just used Google to find airconditioning and came up with
the following information:

     Sizing Air Conditioners
     Air conditioners are rated by the number of British Thermal Units
(Btu) of heat they can remove per hour.
     Another common rating term for air conditioning size is the "ton,"
which is 12,000 Btu per hour. 

I extracted the above from:

It was about a third of the way down from the top of the entire
discussion and is under the heading in heavy type "Sizing Air
Conditioner"
