Fascinating. Ray was self taught during the same years. I think he keyed over 40 words per minute. I learned it around 10 yrs. old cause my brother was ham and used to build his n own receiversSent from Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

I memorized half the code on one day and the other half the next day.  I wired the 6.3 VAC winding on a toy train set transformer in series with a pair of military surplus headphones and key to practice.  A bonus of this was that I was able to hear the nearby Jim Creek Naval Radio station (VLF) coming in over the power lines.  I lived just north of Seattle.  My callsign was WN7WFJ.I practice all the time by speaking CW to myself.
