The element separation distance should not exceed 1/3 wavelength at the
highest hunting frequency.. for 150/450 MHz operation, that means 450 MHz.

Smaller separation distances will yield weaker tones, but otherwise will
still work.

Otherwise, as long as the antennas are identical, they can be any convenient
size, although dipoles will yield best sensitivity. 

( they can be made tiny if signal is strong or range is small )

The length of an element will effect the phase of the
RF current flowing therein.  So, element length and
spacing all need to be considered.  In a practical sense,
why not place a Field Strength Meter some distance
out in front of the array and tune for maximum smoke?
Trivia:  I find that two properly spaced 2-Meter Mag Mounts
on my car does produce a directional signal.
