The length of an element will effect the phase of the
RF current flowing therein.  So, element length and
spacing all need to be considered.  In a practical sense,
why not place a Field Strength Meter some distance
out in front of the array and tune for maximum smoke?
Trivia:  I find that two properly spaced 2-Meter Mag Mounts
on my car does produce a directional signal.
