   Jacques -

I suggest 80m to get Scouts and others started on ARDF.
Equipment is much simpler, less expensive, smaller, and easier
for smaller Scouts to carry. 80m receivers are usually smaller
than 20cm x 40cm and weigh less than 500g. Bearing accuracy
is good, with few of the problems that plague 2m such as
   reflections and multi-path.

Any small QRP transmitter circuit will work: I like the
"Pippin" circuit from the G3PTO web site, but there are
many others. Although 3 - 5 watt transmitters are common
in Europe, I've had good results with 1 watt (covers up
to 10km or more with a reasonable antenna.) Crystals
for 3579 and 3686 MHz are commonly available. In fact,
with a crystal controlled transmitter, the receivers can
also be crystal controlled, which reduces the expense and
makes one less control that beginners can adjust incorrectly.

I've been working with several people on introducing ARDF
to Scout groups. We are still in the early stages, but
hope to get several groups going in the next year or so.
