>I was speaking to one of our CAP friends and he said he had $500

>get a scanner (No crystals) and a attenuator and use some of those
>Measuring tape yagis....

I'm not sure I would recommend this for CAP if it is for group
use. The L-per is much easier to train cadets on, and has
fewer buttons and adjustments for the non-technical types.

(I used to train a Search and Rescue team, and I know how
difficult it can be for non-technical people to understand
things that we all take for granted!)

However, my friend K7FM has been using a small Yaesu hand-held
receiver. I don't remember the part number, but it covers
100 kHz to over 1 GHz, and he has used it for ELT hunts with
a beam and attenuator. They had two versions, one was just
AM/FM and the other included SSB/CW as well. The prices at
HRO were around $120 and $200 respectively, though those
may have changed as other manufacturers have been bringing
   out similar products.

Also, check out the new VK3YNG sniffer - it covers 2m as well
as 120 - 124 MHz, microprocessor, automatic step attenuator,
and a bunch of other features. Doesn't cover 243 MHz though,
but a 100 MHz offset attenuator would take care of that.
