Tom -
I had a similar experience with a 101ZD aquired a few years ago. It
probably had been un-used for a number of years before I got it. Even
though the display behaved just like yours, it was receiving pretty well
on most bands and didn't jump around in frequency as the digital display
was indicating. Leaving it on for a few days helped quite a bit (I
guess the components need some use to get back to their correct
values). Cleaning the internal/external VFO switch contacts and an
alignment cleared up 99% of the display problem, but it still acts up
once in a while.
If it sounds reasonably well when connected to an antenna, then it's not
in as bad a shape as it seems. A friend of mine has a 101E with the
external display, and it flashes and jumps around as well if the radio
is the least bit out of alignment.
