Thanks to all who offered suggestions. AF2C hit the nail on the head when he
suggested tweaking the two VCO slugs 10a/b and 10c/d.
So I adjusted VCO slug 10a/b about one turn clockwise ---- and bands 10a and
10b miraculously came to life. Emboldened, I then tweaked VCO slug 10c/d
about one turn clockwise --- and bands 10c, and 10d came back to life!
Be sure to check both bands associated with each VCO slug before moving on.
Use a nonmetallic tool. Note that the XCO board is located on the underside
of the chassis, but the VCO board is located on the top right hand side of
the chassis and is accessible thru holes in the side of the copper cover
plate.
In summary, all the CB converter did was this:
1. replace 10m xtals 10a, 10b, 10c, and 10d with xtals 2 mhz lower in freq.
2. attempt to tweak the 4 separate XCO slugs to get the rig to oscillate on
the cb frequencies. This probably didnt work so he moved on to:
3. The VCO, where he tweaked the TWO slugs, 10a/b, and 10c/d. This brough
the radio to life on 26-26.5; 26.5-27, 27.0-27.5, and 27.5-28 mhz.
Nothing else was changed.
Ive just heard from a Dutch ham who reports a similar problem withhis 902DM.
There are probably plenty of other similarly modified rigs available at
hamfests. This same procedure works on FT-902DMs, FT-901DMs, and probably
FT-101ZDs, and most other rigs that have been illegally modified for cb use.
