I've been doing business on eBay for nearly 10 years. It's not for novices,
you need to take your time and learn what to look for before you buy and
sell.
I've been burnt a time or two and it irritates me as much as anyone but
compared to the amount of money I've saved over purchasing elsewhere the
loses are miniscule! Just my last purchase saved me much more $ than I had
ever lost on eBay (It was a Nokia Bluetooth headset, retail $180, RShack
closeout $99, eBay $27.95, new in box and works great!) The radio I'm using
now would have cost me $1,100 at any hamfest, I bought it on eBay for a
little over $700. Many of the same dealers we buy from locally and by mail
order, sell the same goods on eBay for less money! I'd be a fool to stop
saving this kind of $.
Another good reason to shop on eBay is for hard to find items. I can think
of several items I could not find anywhere (locally or even after internet
searches) that I was able to purchase on eBay. That included dental supplies
my xyl uses and an office supply item I could no longer find.
The trick is you MUST carefully examine the seller and his auctions,
especially on costly items and use good sense. EBay gives a lot of
information to examine. You can target and 'read' just the feedback of
others who have bought from a seller by clicking on the 'buyers' tab on the
sellers ID page, look at ID history, last selling dates (old dates may
indicate a hijacked acct). Bidding on an auction with hidden user ID's is
asking for trouble, and again if the auction text says something like "email
me before bidding", LOOK OUT. There is now a link at the bottom of every
auction to report a suspicious auction. I use this link and eBay is quick to
wipe out the bad ones!
'Buyers' have no Paypal fees but eBay owns Paypal and I think the combined
'seller' fees are outrageous! Even so, I use Paypal when I sell on eBay. For
me it's worth not having to worry or wait for checks that may bounce or even
fraud money orders . My bank is going to charge me a $30 fee in that case
anyway. Plus, I don't have to use gas to run down to the bank either ;) With
Paypal, I get paid immediately and can transfer the funds to my bank
electronically, no hassle.
Of course, there is always going to be opposition to eBay from those who got
burnt and quit, and dealers who don't use eBay and get burnt from the
competition. Ah, capitalism... you have to love it :)
