The interplay of "correrct" standards and popular usage is interesting.  
Neither group has complete power. Witness:

1) The "official" pronounciation of the prefix Giga rhymes with "jig" 
not with "giggle."  How many people have you heard say it the "right" 
way?  Hasn't popular usage made the wrong way right?

2) The official capacitor symbol is two straight lines.  I think 
majority usasge is one straight and one curved line, nevertheless.

3) The thing that looks like an upside-down christmas tree is officially 
the "earth-ground" symbol.  The thing that looks like a garden rake is 
the chassis ground symbol.  But at least half of intelligent 
practicioners use the christmas tree for chassis ground.  Again, haven't 
"the people" effectively thrown out the standard?

The above is a "USA" perspective.  I suspect it may look different in 
other areas of the world.
