>>ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
I'm a sucker for getting drawn into this, but...

1) The (Random House) dictionary pronunciation of gigabyte is "gig'uh
biet, jig'-" indicating that "gigga" is preferred over "jigga". I'm not
sure what "official" means here.

2) There are several "official" symbols for capacitors -)|- for Fixed,
-||- for Non-polarized, and various combinations with "+" for
electrolytic, "arrow" for variable and more. If the capacitor (formerly
condenser) was limited to your "official capacitor symbol is two
straight lines", there would be significant electrical problems with
equipment built and maintained from schematic drawings. Every seen a 5
Volt 200 Amp 100,000 MFD electrolytic cap, which was installed
backwards, powered on for the first (and only) time?

3) The two symbols for "ground" you refer are valid, but I would add
that there are more than those two.

I suggest that this is a "your" perspective not a "USA" perspective.

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards. They're
available in published form, but quite expensive. Also IEEE Dictionary
of Electronic Terms. There may be web sites; I've never looked.
