You don't have to fry your brain trying to use VI or remember all those strange New cmds!
Try using the Midnight Commander. Like the old DOS utility Norton Commander it takes the sting out of learning new commands and their syntax. You can edit and manage files from this one utility.

At the cmd line... type:
mc.

It may take a bit to get the hang of using the dual windows and the PF keys, but it is mostly intuitive.

If you only need to edit a file and don't need the help of the manager... use the MCeditor. This editor is more like the file editor that you are use to using in Windowz. Type mcedit <file-name>
