Remember - for a desktop exercise / demo or the real thing only the Ham
Radio Server computer need be Win2000 or XP - the others (client computers)
can be Win95, 98, ME - so long as they have a NIC (wired or wireless) and an
e-mail client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.
I just today purchased a "D-Link Air PlusXtreme G High Speed 802.11g
Wireless Router" (backward compatible with 802.11b)... It is for table top
exercises /demos or the real thing with my Win2000 laptop as the Paclink
server, my old Win95 laptop with a wired NIC card to one of the four LAN
ports on the router, and my newer old WinME laptop with its PCIMA wireless
card (802.11b). For demos, the later two computers will represent 'client'
computers and only need Outlook Express configured with their respective
tactical e-mail addresses. The Ham Radio Server will be wired (RJ-45) to a
LAN port on the router and that will leave two empty LAN RJ-45 slots for
other client computers, as well as the whole room full of other wireless
computers if anyone in the audience wants to take two minutes to configure
their laptops with a tactical e-mail address account in the Outlook Express
(or what ever e-mail client) in their machine.
N3PPC and I will be demonstrating this desk top exercise for the Seminole
County ARES/RACES group on October 21st at the Seminole County EOC in
Sanford.
Just think about all those shelter census reports (and what ever else) that
could have been set up by the Red Cross representative (or who ever is
responsible) in his/her e-mail and just SENT - the ham on station could be
paying more attention to more eminent matters requiring the use of voice
channels. Any other information / data that needs to be transferred any
where in the world could be done by e-mail over ham radio.
... there I go - selling again.
During hurricanes Charley and Frances - While my XYL Sally and I were hold
up here w/o commercial power for a total of eight days and w/o internet a
total of 11 days, she was able to sit at her computer (on our LAN) and keep
in touch with our family and friends the whole time. She doesn't know
'radio' from strawberries. Her 'ham radio" e-mail account represented a
served agency/client on my main computer where I had Paclink running and
where the 2M and HF radios were configured.
This is definitely the wave of the future - all we have to do is make the
demos to served agencies... just making these demos to ham groups is not
enough...
