As far as I know, W6XU, who runs a consumer/semi-pro audio mfg biz, 
introduced the CM500 to ham radio with a large group purchase for the 
Northern California Contest Club. I'm guessing around '08 -- I'm sure it 
was after the first K3s hit the street.

Like you, I've passed along the recommendation many times, and like you, 
I've had to buy several replacements. I've never had a problem with the 
ear pads. My failures are all broken cables, primarily because I've 
always been a real klutz.
