Quite simply the speed range is in the hands of the chip designer. The
maximum to minimum speed range of *any* serial port - USB, add-in card,
or mother board is limited to 2^14 due to the use of a 14 bit "baud
rate divisor" in the original PC specification. Designers can either
go for the old 10 baud to 115,000 baud (or 20 baud to 230,000 baud)
range used by terminals and the like or they can go for a 110 bps -
1 Mbps (or 300 bps - 3 Mbps) used by mass storage applications like
USB drives, flash drives, camera transfers, etc.
A device like the Edgeport that was designed primarily as a terminal
and peripheral server (serial printers, bar code scanners, etc.) makes
an excellent device for amateur use as it even supports 45.45, 50, 75,
100 and 110 baud five bit ("baudot") RTTY.
