Mike,
The thing that is wrong with that logic is that AM-S has an "AFC"
associated with it (capture range). So the frequency that AM-S can
capture will not necessarily show the actual carrier frequency.
If you cannot determine the beat frequency, I would suggest you first
use an audio spectrum analyzer like Spectrogram (download at
www.n0ss.net) or SpectrumLab in SSB mode to observe the tones
transmitted by WWV - 500 Hz and 600 Hz on alternate minutes except for
silent minutes and one minute of each hour when 440 Hz is transmitted
(the one second tone at each minute is 1000 Hz).
Once you get the frequency close to correct using the above method, then
try the "beat note" method in the manual - you should be close enough to
hear the beat in CW mode - just adjust until the "wow-wow" tone is as
slow as you can get it.
