Thom, we don't have too many human break-ins here in S. Oregon, but plenty of animal assaults.
They assault my Koi ponds (The Raccoons).
I've found that a simple IR motion detector hooked to a home-brew 400-watt ultrasonic amp with Motorola transducers sweeping from 4K-26K really does the trick on those bandits. I haven't figured out how to stop the deaf ones, however.
IMHO, the IR motion detector (some are about US$12) with one outlet hooked to a siren would cover much of the flat for the least amount of $.
Much easier and cheaper than wiring all the windows and doors or installing a breaking-glass pickup and then they breach the door and it doesn't fire.
Good luck, my friend.
