Hi Paul, w0rw

Amateur radio is the only radio service in which the
operator is allowed to build and/or modify
transmitting equipment. The reason hams have to pass
a theory test is so they have half a chance of being
able to do so without getting into trouble. In the
best ham radio/home-brewing tradition, Wayne and Eric
heartily encourage modifying Elecraft products. To my
knowledge, modifying the rigs wont void the warrantee
except that if you break it, you fix it or pay to have
it fixed.

Also, it looked like you suggested that sending faster
will use up the batteries faster. Sending speed
doesnt significantly affect battery usage. The
percentage of time the key is down is the same
regardless of speed. However, the faster you send, the
less time you need to transmit to get the same
information across, which might use less of the
battery capacity except that you usually use the saved
time to make more QSOs so the operating time comes out
the same.
